As part of the second GCC Women’s Sports Games, held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, from 7-12/3/2011, Qatar’s junior women’s team contested the athletics events on Wednesday and Thursday, 9+10/3/2010, amid stiff competition from Gulf athletes, and Qatar’s junior women managed to claim 8 medals from the championship’s events, which comprised 8 disciplines:
100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, medley relay, high jump, long jump, shot put and discus throw. Athlete Nora Al Malki claimed Qatar’s first gold medal, in the 100m, beating the fastest sprinters in the Gulf to become the fastest female athlete in the Gulf and breaking the Qatari record in the event with a time of 13.72 seconds. The medley relay team followed her lead and won gold as well, and the team did not stop at that gold, going on to win 4 silver and 2 bronze medals; with these medals, Qatar finished third in the championship behind Bahrain and the UAE. The following are the Qatari athletes’ results at the championship. Ms Mariam Abdullah, board member and director of the girls’ training centre, said these achievements were the result of the efforts of those running the federation and the national teams committee, who pay special attention to women’s athletics.
