Qatar’s champions begin training camp in South Africa ahead of new season

The National Teams Committee of the Qatar Athletics Federation announced that a number of our champions would undertake a preparatory training camp ahead of the launch of the new athletics season, which will include participation in numerous important international and continental events, starting with the Asian Cup, the Diamond League meetings, and the biggest and most important event, the World Athletics Championships, hosted by Doha for the first time in the Middle East.

After the brief rest Qatar’s national team champions had to catch their breath following the demanding 2018 season, during which they achieved numerous accomplishments, they immediately resumed training on the track and field of the auxiliary grounds attached to Khalifa International Stadium in the Aspire Zone area, ahead of travelling to South Africa for an overseas training camp that will mark the start of intensive preparations for the new season.

The trio of Abubaker Haydar, Jamal Hairane and Abdalelah Haroun will take part in this camp, amid high hopes for continuing the run of brilliance and achievements seen last season.

Abubaker Haydar, who specialises in the 800m, will take part in the South Africa camp under Brazilian coach Luiz, to be ready for the two Asian championships as well as the 2019 World Championships.

As for 400m runner Abdalelah Haroun, he will leave for the camp on 7 January to train, also under the same Brazilian coach Luiz, and is preparing to compete at the Asian Championships, the relay championships and the World Championships, in addition to the Diamond League meetings.

Jamal Hairane, who competes in the 800m and 1500m, is also preparing for the two Asian championships and the World Championships in Doha.

The Qatar Athletics Federation, chaired by Dr Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, has set a long-term plan to prepare Qatar’s champions for this year’s championships, continuing through to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics two years from now, with the aim of raising Qatar’s name high and achieving many accomplishments.

The federation won the Golden Federation award at the Excellence Day ceremony organised by the Olympic Committee for 2018, following the series of achievements by Qatar’s champions at the Asian Games in Jakarta, the Youth Olympics in Argentina, the Arab and Asian Championships, and the Continental Cup in the Czech Republic.
