Qatar junior team heads to Jordan for West Asian Championships

The Qatar Athletics Federation, chaired by HE Major General Dahlan Al Hamad, deputy president of the IAAF and president of the Asian Athletics Association, is holding its ordinary general assembly today at the Lusail Hall of the Qatar Olympic Committee at 5pm, to discuss an agenda that includes the board’s report on the past sporting season, which saw major achievements for Qatari athletics at continental and world level, including our world champion Mutaz Essa Barshim’s silver medal at the World Championships in Moscow, in addition to other achievements by our athletes in continental and international events such as the Francophone Games, in which Qatari athletics achieved good results despite it being their first participation, as well as the federation’s great success in organising three major championships during the current year – the Gulf Athletics Championship, the Arab Athletics Championships, and the Doha Diamond League meeting – in addition to the Gulf Cross Country Championship, to be held in Qatar next December, and local events from the past season. There was also the major success of Dahlan Al Hamad taking over the presidency of the Asian Athletics Association following elections held last June.

General assembly members will also discuss the closing accounts and the board’s vision for the current sporting season, in addition to hearing the views and proposals of general assembly members, as well as any other business on the agenda.

Separately, Qatar’s junior national athletics team delegation has travelled to Jordan to take part in the West Asian Junior Championships, hosted by Amman from the 23rd to the 26th, with the participation of a select group of promising young male and female athletes from the region who represent the near and distant future of the sport.

The delegation includes 20 male and four female athletes who will take on the challenge in Amman in search of medals, competitive exposure, experience and a wealth of technical benefit, along with 16 members of the technical, coaching and administrative staff. The Qatari delegation is headed by Khalifa Yousuf Abdulmalik, executive director of the Qatar Athletics Federation and head of its jumps department, alongside Saleh Ahmed Hassan, the delegation’s administrator.

Qatar’s team is made up of a group of promising talents that the Qatar Athletics Federation, led by HE Dahlan Al Hamad, is working to develop into champions of the near and distant future, through a clear training approach that produces champions for Qatar and carries the banner of athletics.
