Our world champion Barshim, winner of the high jump bronze medal, was calm, cheerful and full of sportsmanship in accepting the loss of the gold medal, saying: “Yes, today wasn’t my day, and that’s what sport teaches us — winning and losing — and I don’t want to go into reasons or excuses, but I took part in several events in a short space of time, which may have affected me physically and mentally — flying from Shanghai, China, to Eugene, America, and then back to China, Wuhan — that could be one of the factors. I also see the bronze as a motivation to keep going and a stronger drive to correct my mistakes and look ahead to reach the highest levels.”
