The first Arab Women’s Clubs Games got under way for the period (2-12) February under the patronage of the wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, HH Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi. Sports clubs representing (
16) clubs from (11) Arab countries took part in these Games, which are held every (4) years — namely Palestine, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Yemen, Tunisia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Morocco, in addition to the UAE, the host nation. The Games included a number of sports: basketball, volleyball, athletics, shooting and table tennis. They were organised by the Sharjah Women’s Club in cooperation with the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees, the League of Arab States and the Sharjah General Authority for Sports and Youth, under the sponsorship of Sharjah Islamic Bank. The Games drew special media attention as the first women’s sports games of their kind at the Arab level, coming as part of efforts to empower women’s sport and raise it to the level of its counterparts in developed countries. Mr Adel Mohammed Al Baker – Secretary General of the Qatar Athletics Federation – took part as the administrative delegate of the Arab Athletics Federation. The Qatari Girls’ Training Centre took part in the athletics championship with a delegation comprising Ms Mariam Abdullah Al Ishaq, board member and head of mission; Ms Dalal Yousef Al Abdullah, mission administrator; Mr Joachim Krug, technical director; coach Naima Ben Amara; and athletes Israr Ahmed Al Manai, Nour Hussein Al Malki, Bashayer Muslim Al Qureshi, Heba Abdel Nasser and Badia Kamar.
