Our Olympic and world champion Mutaz Essa Barshim opened his new season with a significant achievement, winning first place in the high jump at the Bydgoszcz athletics meeting the day before yesterday, clearing (2.29m) for his first mark of the new season and finishing ahead of Ukraine’s Bondarenko.
The Qatari champion took part in the Bydgoszcz meeting as part of his preparations for the new season, in which he will compete in less than three weeks at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Doha, where he holds the high jump record (2.38m), followed by his preparations for the World Indoor Championships to be held in Portland, USA, a month from now, where he will defend the title he won in the previous edition in Poland. The Qatari champion also has other commitments this season on the Diamond League circuit, where he holds the high jump diamond title, in addition to the biggest challenge of all — the Olympic Games, where he hopes to achieve new Olympic glory.
Mutaz Barshim expressed his happiness at the good start to his current season, saying that his success at the Bydgoszcz meeting gives him fresh motivation for a season full of challenges, affirming his confidence in his ability to take on the challenges of the greatest of all games in the period ahead.
