The IAAF announced that the cities of Doha, the American city of Eugene and Barcelona had formally applied to host the 2019 World Athletics Championships, and the federation explained that the three cities’ bids would be evaluated by Sebastian Coe, the federation’s vice-president, who had previously chaired the organising committee of the London 2012 Olympics, with the city that will have the honour of hosting the championships due to be chosen on 18 November. The cities of Eugene, in the American state of Oregon, and Doha are seeking to host the championships for the first time in their history, with the latter having had the honour of hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In turn, the Spanish city of Barcelona is looking to host this major global event, having previously had the honour of hosting the 1992 Summer Olympic Games and the 2010 European Athletics Championships, noting that Spain had previously hosted the World Athletics Championships in the city of Seville in 1999. It is worth noting that the next World Championships will be held in the Chinese capital Beijing in 2015, while the 2017 edition will be held in the British capital London.
