Al Sadd Sports Club continued its run of victories over the clubs in indoor athletics by winning the youth and men’s categories at the indoor athletics championship, held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 18-20 January 2010, at the Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence, after having triumphed in the boys, cadets and juniors championships in the preceding weeks, in the presence of the president and board members of the Qatar Athletics Federation. Al Sadd’s players dominated the youth category clearly and by a wide margin in points, amassing 134 points, while runners-up Al Gharafa collected 72 points, and Al Rayyan came third with a total of 55 points. Four national records were also broken at the youth championship: the first by Al Rayyan’s Saif Sabah Khairallah in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.37 seconds; the second by his teammate Badr Hashem Khamis, also of Al Rayyan, in the pole vault at a height of 4.50m; then Al Sadd’s Badr Awad Khamis set the third national record in the combined event/heptathlon, scoring 3,685 points; while the fourth record was set by Qatar SC’s Muath Abdulrahman Balla in the 800m with a time of 1:54.60.
In the men’s indoor athletics championship, the battle for supremacy between Al Rayyan and Al Sadd continued for three days. After Al Rayyan had led on the first and second days, Al Sadd caught up with them on the third day and inflicted defeat on them, relegating Al Rayyan to runners-up, as Al Sadd’s players finished the championship with 117 points, while Al Rayyan’s players collected 102 points, having ended the second day’s events with Al Rayyan on 67 points and Al Sadd on 64. Al Sadd’s players thus swept all the titles at the Qatar Indoor Cup championships across the boys, cadets, juniors, youth and men’s categories. Qatar SC’s Al Waleed Abdullah also broke the national indoor record in the long jump, recording a distance of 7.11m. At the close of the championship, Mr Issa Al Harami, the federation’s assistant secretary general and the championship’s technical supervisor, and the board members presented trophies to the top three teams in the youth and men’s championships.
