Al Sadd Sports Club achieved a superb double by winning both the Cadets and Youth Federation Cup athletics championships, held from 14-16/3/2011 at Khalifa International Stadium and attended by HE Abdullah Ahmed Al Zaini, the federation’s president, Mr Adel Al Baker, Secretary-General, Mr Eissa Abdullah Al Harami, Assistant Secretary-General and the championship’s technical supervisor, board members, and a crowd of fans of the mother of sports. In the Cadets Federation Cup, Al Sadd Sports Club’s athletes flew clear of the field and won the championship after totalling 177 points against 128 points for runners-up Al Gharafa Sports Club, while Al Rayyan finished third with 94 points. Qatari athletes in the Cadets category also broke 4 Qatari records, the first in the hammer throw, where Al Sadd’s Rashid Ali Rashid Al Khalifi set a new Qatari record with a distance of 61.87m, while Al Gharafa’s Faisal Masoud Al Jassim set the second record, in the 60m, in 7.40 seconds, followed by his club teammate Abdullah Atiq Bilal, who set a new Qatari record in the 100m hurdles in 14.15 seconds, while the fourth record was set by Al Rayyan’s Khalid Mohammed Safar Al Shahrani in the combined events – hexathlon – with a total of 3,321 points.
In the Youth category, Al Sadd’s athletes had the final word too, settling the championship from the first day and maintaining their dominance to total 191 points and win the Youth title with more than double the points of runners-up Al Gharafa, who totalled 90 points, while third place went to Al Rayyan, whose athletes totalled 82 points. Al Gharafa’s Mohamed Ibrahim Qaida also broke the Qatari record in the javelin throw with a distance of 64.79m. At the close of the championship, HE the federation’s president and board members crowned the clubs finishing in the top three places in the Cadets and Youth categories.
