Al Sadd Sports Club continued its unbroken run of wins over the Qatari clubs in athletics and its solo march towards the general excellence shield. This time it achieved a superb double by winning the Federation Cup athletics tournament for the Ashbal and Shabab categories, held in the afternoons of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 19-21 March 2012, at Khalifa International Stadium, in the presence of HE Abdullah Ahmed Al Zaini – Federation President, Mr Adel Mohammed Al Baker – Secretary General, Mr Essa Abdullah Al Harami – Assistant Secretary
General and technical observer of the tournament, board members, and the administrative and technical staff of athletics at the participating sports clubs, along with fans of the sport.
In the Federation Cup athletics tournament for the Ashbal category, Al Sadd topped the Qatari club standings after collecting (146) points, leaving second place to new runner-up Al Jaish, whose players shone and collected (108) points despite it being only their second participation in club tournaments in this category — evidence of the considerable effort put into developing the players, to the point of outdoing clubs with many years of history in Qatari club tournaments. Al Jaish’s Tariq Abdul Samad Ibrahim also set a new Qatari record in the 1500 m steeplechase with a time of (5:13.20) minutes, breaking the previous record held by Al Ahli’s Ali Nasser Al Marri, which stood at (5:39.95) minutes — the first record set by an Al Jaish athlete, so congratulations to the players and the administrative and technical staff of Al Jaish on their second-place finish, on setting a Qatari record, and on the emergence of a new rival to Al Sadd. Third place went to Al Gharafa with a total of (102) points. Al Sadd’s Abdulrahman Mohammed Al Ahmad also set a new Qatari record in the triple jump with a distance of (12.48) m, breaking his own previous record set in Poland on 27/7/2011, which stood at (12.40) m.
In the Shabab category, Al Sadd pulled away from its nearest rival by roughly double the points, with Al Sadd’s players collecting (161) points while runner-up Al Gharafa collected (89) points, and Al Rayyan came third with a total of (71) points. In the Shabab category, a new Qatari record was also set in the hammer throw by Al Gharafa’s Ashraf Amjad Mohammed with a distance of (73.16) m, breaking the previous record held by Al Sadd’s Oday Amer Ahmed, which stood at (61.31) m.
At the close of the tournament, the top three players and clubs were honoured by HE Abdullah Ahmed Al Zaini – Federation President, Mr Adel Mohammed Al Baker – Secretary General, Mr Essa Abdullah Al Harami – Assistant Secretary General and technical observer of the tournament, and board members, amid cheers from the winning clubs.
