Qatar's Golden Triumph Continues in China
Qatar’s athletes delivered a dominant final day at the 12th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tianjin, China, securing three more gold medals to cap a highly successful campaign.
Ibrahim Abass M Chuot stormed to victory in the men’s 800m, clocking a commanding 1:47.64 from lane 6 to take gold. Zakaria Elahlaami followed suit in the men’s 1500m, winning in 3:43.75 to claim another top spot for the team.
The highlight came in the men’s 4×400m relay, where Qatar (Bassem Hemeida, Ashraf Hussen Osman, Khala Ngare Mahamat, and Ismail Doudai Abakar) powered to gold in a time of 3:08.68 from lane 3. With heats cancelled due to only six teams competing, the straight final showcased Qatar’s depth and strength in the event— despite the injury to standout Ammar Ismail Ibrahim in the individual 400m final.
These successes built on Bassem Hemeida’s Day 2 gold in the men’s 400m (47.27), where he held off challengers to win from lane 1 after teammate Ammar Ismail’s unfortunate DNF around the 180m mark.
Elsewhere on the final day, Sara Shams Ali improved to 8.35 in the women’s 60m hurdles final for seventh after qualifying with 8.37.
Qatar’s four gold medals underline the nation’s prowess in middle-distance and relay events on the Asian indoor scene, with several athletes setting season or personal bests under pressure.
